Style as self-care
I asked a subscriber today what I should do to get more women to try Style Coach- because once you try it, I have a feeling you’ll love it! She said, “For me, style is self-care. That’s what pushed me to do it. I do so much for others- I want this for MYSELF.”
I thought that was an AMAZING thought. Here we are thinking of clothes as function- like brushing our teeth or putting on socks. But clothing really has the ability to lift your mood. Can you remember the time when an outfit put a spring in your step? Made you the best version of yourself? I definitely can. In fact, those were often times when I was brave enough to speak up, be noticed, and take charge. I didn’t feel embarrassed or insecure because I knew at least I had a good outfit on my side!
We moms spend so much time and energy caring for others. Don’t even get me started. Birthday parties, Christmas presents, playdates, classes, games, dentist appointments, school events, and the list goes on and on. Not to mention we have to outfit our children for all these different occasions! I feel I’m constantly on the lookout for some or other item for a child. One needs new sneakers-preferably without shoelaces. The other wants a different style of yoga pant. The other one needs new water bottles. All three need tupperwares for school lunches (because they’ve lost the original ones).
So why is it so hard to take time for our style? Well- I think part of it is that we don’t really NEED the new clothes- we look at our closets, bursting at the seams and think- I definitely don’t need to be stuffing more items in THERE. Then we also have this guilt factor- because putting money into our style means taking it away from something else- new furniture for the backyard, Christmas presents, or that fancy weekend away. It’s also hard to know HOW to invest in our style without help. I know that I struggled for years!! Until I had a personal stylist actually listening to me and making me carve out time on my calendar to think clearly about who I wanted to be- it was really difficult. Maybe we need help to keep us accountable to ourselves- kind of like a personal trainer for weight loss, or a therapist for mental health.
Well here’s to you making time and space for yourself, your style, your confidence. You deserve to walk with a spring in your step. You don’t NEED new clothes, but you DO NEED to feel able to make the most of your day. I hope you find your groove!
