The Scrunchie Fail

We’re all diverse in the style “vibes” we are going for, but there are some common words I feel we’re all sort of going for. “Put together” is one- we want to look intentional, cohesive. “Casual”- we don’t want to look too fussy. “Modern”- we don’t want to seem like we stepped out of 1998 (although that would probably be cool right now and we wouldn’t know it).

What about “youthful”? So that’s something I’ve been feeling like is a style vibe I’m trying to hit- just given that I’m a 40-something with 3 kids and starting to feel the pangs of “old lady” when I complain about how my knee hurts or how it’s hard to sleep through the night.

Sneakers? Check. Sling bag? Check. Scrunchie? Check. Wait hold up. No check?

I recently submitted a photo to my style coach with a huge scrunchie on my head in a half up ponytail. She was so polite in her feedback, saying it wasn’t the hairstyle or the scrunchie itself- just that it was making my upper half too “busy”. But I looked at the photo again- yeah. That scrunchie had to go. It was TOO MUCH. Trying TOO HARD. Outfit fail.

I think it’s so important to take risks- so this is not to say you shouldn’t take risks. But my style coach called out the fact that I was trying way too hard to send a certain vibe. It’s like when we push ourselves into those body slimming girdles and wear heels and also make our hair do something it doesn’t want to do- it ends up looking uncomfortable instead of sexy.

So take risks!! But keep your cool, effortless vibe. You are hot stuff- the outfit is just the frosting on top.

Well if the frosting is a scrunchie, maybe keep it in the back. Haha.
